What your child learns at each stage, and how we teach it.
The Early Years Foundation Stage covers birth through five years. It is used in England to educate all children through their foundation stage. There are six areas of learning, and most children are expected to achieve most of the early learning goals before they enter Kindergarten. Learning happens through play, both child initiated and planned. Teachers deliver it through whole class activities, adult led focused activities and child initiated activities.
Children get experiences and support that help them build a positive sense of themselves and of others. They learn respect for others, grow their social skills, and develop a positive disposition to learn. They also learn to hold their attention, concentrate, and sit quietly when the moment calls for it.
This area covers using language for communication and thinking, and linking sounds with letters. Reading and writing are supported, encouraged and extended. Children learn to be competent speakers and listeners, and they get chances to use those skills in many situations and for many purposes. They try writing for different purposes, using features of different forms such as lists, stories and instructions.
Children build their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy across a broad range of contexts, where they can explore, enjoy, learn, practice and talk about their growing mathematical understanding. They get chances to practice and extend counting, matching, sorting, seeking patterns, moving connections, shapes, space and measurement, so they gain confidence and competence in using them.
Children's creativity grows when their curiosity, exploration and play are supported. They get chances to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through art, music, movement, dance, imaginative and role-play activities, mathematics, and design and technology. They discover color, texture, form and shape in two and three dimensions.
Here children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding that help them make sense of the world. Activities built on first hand experiences encourage exploration, experimentation, observation, problem solving, prediction and discussion. They use a range of tools safely, meet creatures, people, plants and objects in natural and real-life settings, try practical experiments, and work with many materials. They are encouraged to ask why things happen and how things work.

You notice it at home. Your child starts holding attention longer at the table. They tell you a story in order, link a letter to its sound, and write their name on a card. They ask to help, take turns, and try again when something is hard. Those small habits are the foundation stage doing its work, ready for kindergarten.
